"A Father’s Pride, a Son’s Honour: A Historic Installation at Duke of Kent Lodge No 5818"

A Special Installation

Held at Maidstone Masonic Centre, Tovil, the Installation Meeting brought together members of the Lodge, visiting Brethren and distinguished guests for an afternoon of ceremony, friendship and celebration. But for Alan and Lloyd, the day carried an extra significance: the privilege of a father installing his own son as Master of their Lodge.

Having spent considerable time preparing his words for the ceremony, Alan carried out the installation with care, confidence and great character. There was, perhaps, a touch of emotion too — entirely understandable given the special bond between father and son and the significance of the occasion.

For Lloyd, taking the Chair of King Solomon represents both a considerable honour and a responsibility: to lead the Lodge, support its members and help preserve the traditions and values that have sustained Freemasonry through generations.

The ceremony was conducted with the support of the Lodge officers and visiting Brethren, whose contributions helped make the occasion so memorable.

A warm welcome and congratulations

Following his installation, Lloyd received the congratulations of the Brethren, together with a welcome from W. Bro Ralph Craig, the Provincial Grand Master's Visiting Officer, who congratulated the newly installed Worshipful Master on behalf of the Right Worshipful Provincial Grand Master.

The meeting also recognised the commitment and dedication of those who took part in the ceremony. The presentations of the Working Tools, the addresses to the Worshipful Master, Wardens and Brethren, and the musical contributions all played their part in delivering a memorable Installation Meeting.

A special thank you goes to everyone who prepared for and participated in the ceremony, including those who stepped into acting offices to ensure the proceedings ran smoothly.

Fellowship at the Festive Board

Following the ceremony, the Brethren and visitors gathered for the Festive Board, where good food, excellent company and plenty of conversation provided the perfect opportunity to celebrate.

The much-anticipated speeches brought their own mixture of warmth, humour and heartfelt words, rounding off an already memorable day. The generosity of those present was also evident in the collection for Alms, which raised £92.88, and in the evening’s charity raffle, which raised a further £240 for charitable causes.

A Lodge built on friendship and service

The installation was not simply a milestone for a new Worshipful Master. It was also a reminder of the strength of the friendships, family connections and shared commitment that make Lodge life so meaningful.

Duke of Kent Lodge No. 5818 remains committed to supporting its members, welcoming suitable new candidates into Freemasonry and contributing to charitable causes in the local community and beyond. Its charitable work reflects the principle that fellowship goes hand in hand with service to others.

Our sincere thanks go to all the Brethren, visitors and guests who attended, supported the ceremony and helped make the day such a success.

A proud day for a father, a memorable milestone for a son, and a special chapter in the story of Duke of Kent Lodge No. 5818.

"An Operative Mason and a Morse of Lewises"

Some might say it’s risky to do anything on Friday the thirteenth. Not so for the Duke of Kent Lodge No 5818, who had a very memorable meeting on Friday 13th February 2026 – for all the right reasons.

It seemed at first glance a simple and straightforward Second Degree Ceremony for Brother Francis Sullivan. And so it was – well executed and enjoyed by all. But what else was going on?

Here is the first unusual thing: Francis is a practising stonemason! He was recently recruited into the Lodge following a chance meeting between Francis and Lodge Master Alan Chitty whilst at Nettlestead Church cemetery as Francis tended to a headstone. You know how it is: you get chatting and one thing leads to another.

Francis also lives in Stone near Dartford: yes really!

Duke Of Kents (Very Own) Four Father-and-Son pairs (Lewises)

A Special Family Connection

One particularly special feature of the evening was the remarkable number of father-and-son pairs in attendance. The Lodge is proud to have four such pairs, known in Freemasonry as Lewises, as pictured:

  • Graham Moore and his son Jim, who serves as Inner Guard.

  • Steve Downing and his son Ben, Steward and Banqueting Steward respectively.

  • Alan Allchone and his son Lee.

  • Alan Chitty, Lodge Master, and his son Lloyd, Senior Warden.

And the family connections did not end there! Three further father-and-son pairs joined us for the meeting, bringing the total to an impressive seven:

  • Les Tasker and his son Seymour Tasker, both members of Robinson Lodge No. 2046.

  • Mark Bailey and his son John, both members of New Silver Jubilee Lodge No. 8823, Essex.

  • Mark Best, the Lodge’s recent joining member, and his father David, of Bishopway Lodge No. 6061.

Quite what the collective noun for a gathering of Lewises might be remains open to debate. Perhaps a “Morse”? A thought that might have Inspector Morse himself — played by the late John Thaw — turning in his grave!

Beyond the numbers, this remarkable gathering was a wonderful illustration of the family bonds, shared traditions and enduring friendships that make Freemasonry so special. It was a fitting reflection of the spirit of fellowship that runs through Duke of Kent Lodge No. 5818.

Fellowship Continues at the Festive Board

Following the formal proceedings, members and guests continued the celebrations at the Festive Board, which proved to be a highlight in its own right. Fine food and wine accompanied the traditional toasts, with thoughtful speeches and plenty of laughter creating a warm and convivial atmosphere. It was a fitting end to a memorable evening celebrating achievement, tradition and Masonic companionship.

"Ben Downing’s Memorable Initiation"

In June, Ben Downing began his journey into Freemasonry through the Just Ask One portal. Already familiar with the fraternity—his father had once been a London Lodge member—Ben attended a Lodge Open Day at the Wilmington Masonic Centre in West Kent.

Referred to Group 5 Membership Advisor Alan Chitty, Ben joined Duke of Kent Lodge 5818 in Maidstone. With some behind-the-scenes effort, his father Stephen attended and actively participated in the initiation, presenting Ben with the badge of a Mason and explaining the First Degree tools—a delightful surprise for all present.

Over 50 Masons attended, and in a lighthearted moment, the organist played I’m Forever Blowing Bubbles in tribute to Ben and his father’s shared love of West Ham. Ben is now officially a member of the Province of East Kent, highlighting the dedication of the Membership Team and the welcoming spirit of Freemasonry.

“Whisky, Wards, and Freemasonry: Our Scottish Adventure ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡งโœจ”

Scotland Trip – 19th-20th April 2024
By Fraser Mcllwrick

Our whirlwind Scotland trip was full of rich experiences and warm hospitality. We started with a traditional Scottish breakfast at Fraser’s mum’s house—tatie scones, haggis, black pudding, and sausage rolls, all washed down with tea.

Our first stop was Tarbolton Lodge, associated with Robert Burns and Iain Knox’s father. We toured the museum and temple and witnessed a 3rd-degree ceremony—more intense than the English version. The day ended with light snacks, drinks, and camaraderie, highlighted by meeting Hugh “the Man of Iron” McNeillie, retired professional footballer.

The next day took us to Ayr, visiting the Auld Kirk, Burns Monument, and the Bonnie Doon Hotel (thanks to Alan’s quick charm). We also saw The Brig o' Doon, the famous 15th-century bridge from Burns’s Tam o’ Shanter.

Our stay at the Adamton Hotel was comfortable, though the Worshipful Master’s allegedly haunted room added some eerie excitement.

The trip offered a profound insight into the role of Freemasonry in Scottish communities, highlighting rich traditions, hospitality, and camaraderie. We left with deep appreciation for our Scottish brethren and eagerness to explore more of Scotland’s Masonic heritage.

"Brotherhood, Memories & Music: A Special Night in St Helens" ๐Ÿป

On Thursday 9th May 2024, W.M. Paul Considine led a party of six Brethren north to his hometown of St Helens.

After checking into a hotel conveniently located near the Masonic Hall, we spent time strolling down memory lane, visiting places from Paul’s youth. The day culminated in an evening visit to Hardshaw Lodge 8722, where we had the privilege of witnessing a Third Degree ceremony.

The temple was truly impressive, and we were made to feel exceptionally welcome by the host Brethren. The Festive Board that followed offered excellent food, refreshing drinks, and outstanding company.

Later, some of the local Brethren kindly guided us to a nearby pub, where we enjoyed further drinks and music into the early hours.

It was a fantastic day and evening—one that will remain in our memories for years to come.
